More capacitor shenanigans, this time my original Xbox.
Looks pretty crusty, but thankfully doesn't seem to have leaked badly on the board.
Time for a full review of all the caps I think.
This on in particular I believe is a super capacitor used in place of a battery.

New super capacitor on order
2.5v 1.0F is the order of the day. Looking at some of the pics on the interweb, I got very lucky as there is almost no leakage at the bottom, it's all at the top and doesn't seem to have run down the board.
Maybe the fact it was out ready to use, so horizontal and not vertical, meant I got lucky.
Definitely in the middle of a capocalypse here.
If any of you have an original Xbox, I'd really suggest you check what revision it is from the information here: Identify Xbox version
And if you're anything up to V1.5, then you need to deal with the clock capacitor right away.

Re: OG Xbox on the bench - and just in time.
Thanks for the warning @rubber_jonnie ! I have 2x original XBOX of my own plus one from another family member, so I'd better get them out & check the versions!
Re: OG Xbox on the bench - and just in time.
There are some nasty design flaws with the OG Xbox. I have three and they still get a bit of use, battlefront and KOTOR are brilliant. I've pulled the caps from two of them and the third is still an unmolested model.
One of mine copped the arcing power cable problem. I repaired and improved the socket. The official M$ solution was absolute rubbish.

Lovely electrolyte!
Intro retro computers since before they were retro...
ZX81->Spectrum->Memotech MTX->Sinclair QL->520STM->BBC Micro->TT030->PCs & Sun Workstations.
Added code to the MiNT kernel (still there the last time I checked) + put together MiNTOS.
Collection now with added Macs, Amigas, Suns and Acorns.

Not heard of the arcing power cable problems, what's that one all about?atari030 wrote: ↑Sun Jul 03, 2022 10:15 pm There are some nasty design flaws with the OG Xbox. Re: OG Xbox on the bench - and just in time.
The input jack for AC is mechanically crap. It breaks and the pin can arc and splutter and carry on. M$'s fix was to supply a fused power cable. I repaired mine with a heavy piece of wire and a cable tie IIRC.

It might burn your house down but a cable will fix it......? Can't complain, picked that one up for $10 in a thrift shop and it was modded too. I'm running a HDMI adapter into a 75" TV @ 1080i.

All UK Xbox Crystal are v1.6 so if you've got one of those you don't need to check they will be ok
@rubber_jonnie are you going to do anything exciting with your Xbox? RAM upgrade? VGA BIOS & cable? Fanless? DVD driveless?
