Building a DIY large bed 3D printer

Post by Icky »

Yet another project hits my list. I have started looking at building a DIY 3D printer to be able to print a full sized ST Case we have been working on. https://www.exxosforum.co.uk/forum/viewt ... 341#p24793

The current build area for my project is 550mm x 350mm x 250mm to be able to print a whole case section, as well as not to be too big to fit in the house :), and the printer is based on the Voron 2.1 http://vorondesign.com/voron2.1

Partly this is for the fun of building my own 3D printer but at the same time help the STFM case project along.

I have ordered several parts already and will update on the build here.

:bravo:

If my old 3D printer is any good, you could salvage some motors off it or something ?

Actually that would be a good donor exxos but will depend on the style of printer Icky is building.

What you planning on Icky? Mines a prusia based printer which are easy to build and tweak.

Thanks PhilC. At the moment I have just got the frame and mechanical bits to do first as those have been ordered. Will look at the electronics a bit later.

Thanks Exxos. I have ordered the motors already. What model was your old printer?

It is a Voron 2 build. I looked at several Core XY DIY type builds but eventually went down the Voron route. This was an interesting comparison of what is out there https://mechlab.cc/which-corexy-voron-v ... rcube-evo/

Parts have started to trickle in this morning. Postman was a bit weighed down with the metal frame and stepper motor components.

ST mouse for scale next to the frame pieces, it's going to be one big printer.

Now I have the mammoth task of printing out all the additional parts in ABS on my old printer.

I have also been looking at the following HR-PLA 3D870 https://filament2print.com/gb/special-p ... 3d870.html which is supposedly PLA similar to ABS properties. In addition you can temper it to make it harder.

Wonder if anyone has tried it?

That material looks interesting. I've got a roll of Tpu to try too.
